Background
Complete Fire Compliance was appointed to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment at a two-form entry primary school in Exeter. The school consisted of a main teaching block, sports hall, kitchen area and portable classroom units.
Key Findings
During the assessment several fire safety issues were identified:
Fire doors held open without approved hold-open devices
Emergency lighting units not operational in two corridors
Minor breaches in fire compartmentation around electrical service penetrations
Fire action notices missing in some classrooms
Fire door closers disconnected on two corridor doors
Recommendations
The following actions were recommended:
Install magnetic hold-open devices linked to the fire alarm system
Replace defective emergency lighting fittings
Carry out fire stopping works to restore compartmentation
Install compliant fire action signage
Reconnect and maintain fire door self-closing devices
Outcome
The school completed the recommended works within 6 weeks, significantly improving fire safety compliance. A follow-up review confirmed the building met the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
